The national flag has three parts. The Union Jack represents Australia's history of British settlement and the laws and institutions that came with it. The Commonwealth Star has seven points: six for the states and one for the territories. The Southern Cross is a group of stars that can be seen in the southern sky.
The Australian Aboriginal Flag is black, red and yellow. The top black half represents the Aboriginal peoples of Australia, the bottom red half the earth and its ceremonial significance, and the yellow circle the sun. The Torres Strait Islander Flag has green stripes for the land, a blue panel for the sea, and black lines for the Torres Strait Islander people. In the centre, a white dancer's headdress (dhari) represents all Torres Strait Islanders, and the five points of the white star represent the island groups.
The Commonwealth Coat of Arms is the official symbol that identifies the authority and property of the Commonwealth of Australia. Its shield represents the six states and Federation, and it is held up by two native animals, a kangaroo and an emu. The national anthem is 'Advance Australia Fair'.
