The states and territories

Australia has six states and two mainland territories. The national capital is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. Western Australia is the largest state, and Victoria is the smallest of the mainland states.

Remember

Capital cities

Each state and territory has its own capital: New South Wales โ€“ Sydney; Victoria โ€“ Melbourne; Queensland โ€“ Brisbane; Western Australia โ€“ Perth; South Australia โ€“ Adelaide; Tasmania โ€“ Hobart; Northern Territory โ€“ Darwin; Australian Capital Territory โ€“ Canberra.

Remember

Landscape, seas and neighbours

Australia lies between the Indian Ocean to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The Tasman Sea separates it from New Zealand, Bass Strait separates Tasmania from the mainland, and Papua New Guinea is its nearest neighbour to the north. Much of the inland is dry Outback, so most people live near the coast. Famous places include Uluru in the Northern Territory, a sacred site for Aboriginal people, and the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland, the world's largest coral reef system. The Murray is the longest river, and Mount Kosciuszko in New South Wales is the highest mountain on the mainland. Because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, summer is from December to February. The mainland has three standard time zones.
